Basic Info

Hello, this is Ron.

In this blog, “Future Atlas by Ron,” I write realistic travel diaries of the places I have visited based on my experience of traveling to more than 15 countries, as well as my impressions and insights from my travels.

I usually travel on my days off while working full time in Tokyo, and I am active in my efforts to share the charm of international travel with everyone.

In this article, I have compiled some basic information about Guam in an easy-to-understand format for the latest edition of the 2025 Guam trip.

Guam is part of the territory of the United States of America, about 3.5 hours from Japan. With its beautiful beaches and resorts, it is an attractive tourist destination for beginners and repeat visitors alike. Here are some basic points you should know before travelling to Guam, such as the local language, currency, climate, means of transport and clothing, to help those who are planning to visit Guam.

The entire trip and details on costs can be found in the [Guam travel summary article].

What is Guam like?

  • Location/nationality: Guam is a territory (territory) of the USA, accessible by a flight of about 3.5 hours from Japan.
  • Language: the official language is English. Japanese is often understood at tourist attractions and hotels, but it is helpful to learn simple English.
  • Currency: The US dollar (USD) is used. Cashless payments are the norm in the country, so you don’t need a lot of cash, but it is useful to have a small amount of cash ready.

Climate and what to wear

  • Temperature: everlasting summer climate of around 30 degrees Celsius throughout the year.
  • Seasons:
    • Rainy season: June-October. Squalls and thunderstorms can occur suddenly.
    • Dry season: Nov-May. Relatively sunny days.
  • Clothing: Basically short sleeves and shorts are OK; however, the air-conditioning inside is often strong, so a light cloak is comfortable.

How do we get around in Guam?

  • Renting a car is the basic means of transportation. If you have a Japanese driver’s license, you can drive without an international driver’s license.
  • Since the island is small, getting around by car is very convenient. Tourist spots are concentrated on the island, so you can get around efficiently even on a short trip.
  • Traffic rules are the American way: drive on the right side of the road and drive on the left. Familiarize yourself with traffic signals and signs.
