Hello, this is Ron!
This time we bring you a review of our Jetstar flight experience between Narita, Japan and Shanghai, China.
How are LCCs really like? ‘Is it comfortable?’ I have summarised the advantages and disadvantages that I actually felt while answering these questions.
In this blog, “Future Atlas by Ron,” I write realistic travel diaries of the places I have visited based on my experience of traveling to more than 15 countries, as well as my impressions and insights from my travels.
I usually travel on my days off while working full time in Tokyo, and I am active in my efforts to share the charm of international travel with everyone.

Airline ticket reservations and fees
- Round-trip fare: 36,000 yen (per person)
- How to book: Jetstar official website (book about 1 month before departure)
👉 Jetstar official website
It is an LCC airline, so it is cheap anyway!
A round trip on ANA or JAL on the same sector would cost 70,000-100,000 yen, so if price is important to you, this is a very good deal.
Flight details

- Outward: 10:25pm GK35 Narita Airport (T3) → 1:20am Pudong Airport (T2)
- Return: 2:20am GK36 Pudong Airport (T2) → 6:20am Narita Airport (T3)
- Flight time: approx. 3.5 hours
As the flight is late at night, there is little waiting time at the airport and it is efficient. However, as arrival in Shanghai is at 1:20am, the only way to get to the city is by taxi.
Seat and cabin reviews
- The seats are narrower and thinner.
- I was concerned about the direct impact when the legs of the person behind me hit me.
- As an LCC, there is no meal on board (can be purchased for a fee). However, as it is a three-and-a-half hour flight, there is little need for it. I bought snacks at an airport convenience store and brought them on board.
Clientele and atmosphere.
- Most passengers are Chinese. Chinese is spoken in the cabin and manners are not very good.
- The souvenir shops at the airport were full of Chinese people, and there were huge queues at the checkout counters.
- The sense of distance and personal space on board the aircraft was also close, and the atmosphere was a little uncomfortable.
However, the CAs were courteous, with a sense of security in being a subsidiary of JAL. I had the impression that the service was as good as that of a full-service carrier.
Hotel situation after arrival at the airport

I arrived at Pudong Airport at 1:20am and stayed at Da Zhong Pudong Airport Hotel Shanghai, a hotel directly connected to the airport, instead of moving into the city.
- Rate: approx. 9,000 yen (per night/booked through Agoda)
- Location: directly connected to Pudong International Airport (walking distance, 24-hour front desk service).
- Room: clean and comfortable. Safe for late night arrivals!

Location: Shanghai Pudong International Airport, 6001 Yingbin Blvd, Pudong, Shanghai, China

For a combination of ‘late night flight + late night arrival’, staying at this hotel is the best option.
Return flight (GK36)
Take a late night flight on the way back.
Pudong Airport 2:20 → Narita Airport 6:20
The flight time is short, so you arrive in Japan while you sleep a little. As the flight arrived in the morning, I was able to make good use of the whole day as it was.
Advantages and disadvantages of using Jetstar.
✅ Advantages
- As low as 36,000 yen round trip
- Many flights to/from Narita
- High quality CAs as a subsidiary of JAL
- No problem for short flights even without meals
❌ Disadvantages
- Seats are narrow and the seats are thin, so comfort is low.
- Passenger manners can be a bit of a problem.
- Limited means of transport after arrival when using late-night flights

Jetstar is the **‘I just want to go to Shanghai on the cheap!’ ** is the best option for those who want to go to Shanghai with an emphasis on cheapness.
Those who can prioritise cost performance over comfort will be satisfied.
However, late-night flights have restrictions on movement after arrival, so it is essential to use a hotel directly connected to the airport. If you keep this in mind, you can enjoy an efficient trip to Shanghai while keeping costs down!
