Hello, this is Ron.
One of the most enjoyable parts of traveling is shopping. This time, I would like to introduce you to some of the places I visited in Shanghai, including Xintiandi, Tianzifang, Nanjing East Road, and a local supermarket, Carrefour. Shanghai offers a wide range of shopping experiences, from luxury brands to cute sundries, classic souvenirs and local daily necessities.
In this blog, “Future Atlas by Ron,” I write realistic travel diaries of the places I have visited based on my experience of traveling to more than 15 countries, as well as my impressions and insights from my travels.
I usually travel on my days off while working full time in Tokyo, and I am active in my efforts to share the charm of international travel with everyone.

新天地 -Xintiandi-|Luxury brands and a photogenic townscape

Xintiandi, renovated from the Shikokumen Houses built in the 1920s and 1930s, is a fashionable area that retains the atmosphere of the French Concession. Lined with luxury brand stores and cafes, it is a popular spot for tourists.
The monuments and streetscapes that symbolize Xintiandi are picturesque no matter where you cut them off. Those who want to buy brand-name goods can of course enjoy visiting this area just as a photo spot.

田子坊 –Tianzifang-|An alley town where sundries and art gather

A maze of alleys, “Tagobo” is a shopping area in a renovated historical residential area. Lined with cute general stores and fashionable cafes, the area is crowded with young people and tourists alike.
With the increase of art studios and ateliers in the 2000s, the area has become a spot with an artistic atmosphere. Handmade goods and art goods make great souvenirs, and it was an exciting place to just walk around.

南京東路 -East Nanjing Road-|Souvenirs from the high street and a night view typical of Shanghai

Nanjing East Road, which runs from People’s Square to the Bund, is Shanghai’s most famous shopping street. It is a pedestrian paradise and bustles with people day and night.
This time we visited m&ms World Shanghai and Shanghai First Food Store.
There are only a few m&ms specialty stores in the world, and there are plenty of Shanghai-style decorations and limited-edition goods. The colorful interior is a great place to take pictures.
Shanghai No.1 Food Store is a food department store with sweets and tea on the first floor, a food supermarket on the second floor, and a food court on the third floor. Here I purchased a Shanghai specialty, dabai tunaitan (大白兎奶糖). It is a famous milk candy that is a standard Shanghai souvenir, and a must-try.
We visited Nanjing East Road at dusk, and the neon lights were beginning to turn on, creating a magical atmosphere. It is a great place to enjoy not only shopping but also strolling around at night.

Carrefour|Feel the lifestyle at a local supermarket
The last place we visited was Carrefour, a large supermarket that local people use on a daily basis. Unlike tourist attractions, this is a place where you can experience Shanghai life firsthand.
A wide variety of Chinese teas are recommended as souvenirs. I bought white tea this time, but you can also find oolong tea and jasmine tea at reasonable prices. In addition, there are also a variety of unique Chinese snacks and seasonings, which are especially recommended for those who love supermarkets.
