What’s Shanghai like?
- Location/Nationality: Shanghai is located within China’s territory and is accessible via a flight of approximately 3.5 hours from Japan.
- Language: The official language is Chinese (Mandarin). English is widely understood in tourist areas and hotels, but knowing some basic Chinese will give you peace of mind.
- Currency: The Chinese Yuan (CNY) is used. Cashless payments are the norm locally, so cash is generally unnecessary, but having a small amount on hand is advisable.
- Temperature: Year-round average is around 18°C (64°F), similar to Japan.
- Seasons:
- Spring: March–May. Warm, 20–25°C (68–77°F)
- Summer: June–August. Over 30°C (86°F)
- Autumn: September–November. Pleasant and comfortable
- Winter: December–February. Average around 4°C (39°F). Strong winds make it feel colder.
- Transportation: The subway (Metro) is recommended.
- Travel within Shanghai costs about 2-5 yuan per ride.
- This trip included both the city center and suburbs (Nanxiang, Zhujiajiao), with total transportation costs around ¥1,500.
- Ease of Sightseeing: Shanghai’s attractions are concentrated, making it enjoyable even for short trips.
- Hotels: Comfortable hotels are available for around ¥9,000 to ¥10,000 per night.
- Food costs: Meals often cost less than ¥1,000 each, giving the impression of relatively low prices.
