Local Gourmet & Restaurant Reviews

Hello, this is Ron.
I would like to report on my visit to the “Taiwan Festival” being held on May 30, 2025 at the Sky Arena on the ®︎4 floor of Tokyo Skytree Town in Oshiage, Tokyo!

This is a food stall event where you can experience food and culture from all over Taiwan under the theme of “365 Days of Taiwan Night Markets in Japan

Here are the three restaurants I visited this time!

The festival featured a wide selection of Taiwan’s classic delicacies such as “Xiao Long Pow,” “Da Ji Pai,” and “Lu Rohan,” among others! In addition, there were a total of 13 stalls offering Taiwanese fortune-telling, foot massages, and other services.

1. Hu Jiao Bing (pepper cake): 700 yen

The first thing I ordered was a pepper cake (hu jiao bing).
I couldn’t forget the taste I had at the Raohe Street Night Market during my trip to Taiwan, and the nostalgia drew me to it, so I immediately decided to try it.

The peppery meat filling is wrapped in bread dough and baked to a crisp.
The texture is crispy on the outside and chewy on the inside, the meat is juicy, and there is a slight aroma of Chinese herbs in the air.
The price was 700 yen, which is typical of a food stall, but the taste was well reproduced!

2. “Da Ji Pai” (chicken breast meat): 1,200 yen

The second stall was a large fried chicken dish (da ji pai) the size of one’s face.
This was my first time trying this dish, as I had never had it before in Taiwan!

The chicken is thinly pounded, seasoned, battered and deep-fried.
It is very satisfying and gives the impression of spicy fried chicken with a strong salt and pepper flavor.
It is delicious but makes you thirsty.
Even so, the restaurant is very popular and there was a long line of people waiting in line even before the restaurant closed!

3. Su Zha Da You Yu (fried squid): 1,200 yen

The last dish I chose was the Su Zha Da You Yu (deep-fried squid)!
I couldn’t forget the taste I had at Shifen in Taiwan, so I couldn’t resist ordering this one as well!

A luxurious dish of deep-fried whole squid.
Although it was not hot this time because the restaurant was about to close, it was well seasoned.
It had a salty taste and would go well with beer.
It is not often you get a chance to eat a whole squid, so I personally recommend this dish!

There are other Taiwanese delicacies that you may be interested in!

I didn’t get to try it this time because of limited time, but there are other…

  • Xiao Long Pao (small dumpling) – 700 yen
  • Lu Rohan (roasted meat and rice) – 1,200 yen
  • Tapioca milk tea stall, etc.

There were so many dishes that Taiwanese lovers could not resist.
I wanted to conquer all of them, but due to the closing time and my wallet, I had to give up this time.
I would like to try again next time!

Finally

The “Taiwan Festival” being held in Oshiage was a great event to feel the atmosphere of a local night market.
It is recommended not only for those who love Taiwan, but also for those who want to feel like a traveler.
The event will be held until Sunday, June 1, 2025, so if you are interested, please visit the event!
